THINGS THAT CAN BE DONE TO PREVENT A RECOVERING ADDICT GOING INTO A RELAPSE

Once a recovering addict has successfully completed a spell in a rehabilitation clinic in order to eliminate their dependency problems, the next few months are critical in ensuring that the addict enjoys success in their efforts to remain clean and sober. There are a variety things that the family can do (as well as the addict) in order to ensure that a person can begin their drug-free life on the right foot.

One of the main reasons why the first few months following a detoxification are so critical is because it is the time where an addict is proving to themselves that it is possible to lead a life without drugs. Once they can show themselves that they can be successful and independent without an addictive substance ruling their lives, it can lead the way onto ensuring that normality is possible – with their life being even better than ever before.

However, there are some things which can get in the way of an addict’s opportunity to lead a clean life. An example of these are times of stress, depression and trauma, where a recovering addict can handle their emotions through the consumption of an addictive substance like they did before their treatment. For this reason, many recovering addicts are recommended to take things easy in the time following on from their treatment. A time of relaxation and calm can allow for the addict to settle back into their normal lives without constant focus being on the cravings that they may experience because of a lack of drugs.

Every single drug addict is likely to get temptation from time to time. Sobriety meetings are one of the things that many rehabilitation clinics offer to those who have successfully completed a treatment program. The meetings, which are held on a regular basis, allow an addict to share any of the difficulties which they may have been experiencing with a counsellor who can give advice on how to overcome a problem. Most sobriety meetings also offer group counselling, in a move which is similar to that of the AA meetings which are so commonly seen in TV shows and movies. With the opportunity for an addict to hear from those who are in a similar scenario to that of their own, friendship groups can be formed and inspiration shared.

A recovering drug addict needs to have the incentive to become clean – and this is why establishing reachable goals which can give an addict that little bit of ambition can work wonders. Whether milestones which signify how long the addict has been sober are used; milestones which highlight how much money has been saved because of the habit which has been kicked; or goals like getting a job are rewarded – establishing something for an addict to aim for can make them feel like they have a purpose at a time when their own feeling of worth can be low. What’s more, achieving a goal can allow an addict to know that slowly but surely, progress is being made.
